So one of the things I have difficulty giving up when going zero waste is diary. People who like ice cream raise their hands! So back to the point, diary is also a big factor in global emissions / climate change. So what choice do we have? enter Straus! It may be available at other stores, but I found it at Whole Foods Market in LA. Cutting Diary may be the ultimate goal, (or at least until sustainable farming practices in mainstream) but to the least we can choose diary products that have the smallest environment impact.

How does it work? So you put in a 2 dollar (USD) deposit, and once you rinse and return the glass bottle, you get the money back! Othen than the awesome glass bottles, Straus promotes 100% organic, sustainable farming methods, and their factory runs on renewable energy. What's there not to love? Oh, they also have organic ice cream!

This blog By Good Eggs does a great job reporting the story of Straus Family Creamery, check it out!

From their website:

Founded in 1994, Straus Family Creamery is a mission-driven, family-owned-and-operated business dedicated to making premium organic dairy products, with minimal processing. The Straus Dairy Farm and Creamery, located in the small town of Marshall on the Northern California Coast, was the first certified organic dairy farm west of the Mississippi River and the first 100% certified organic creamery in the United States.

In addition to the Straus Dairy Farm, Straus Family Creamery buys certified organic, Non-GMO Project Verified milk from eight other organic family farms in Northern California’s Marin and Sonoma Counties. The combination of rich soil, one of the nation’s most diverse grassland systems, and a mild coastal climate create the ideal setting for organic dairy farming. Land stewardship and sustainable farming are deeply rooted principles in certified organic farming practices.

So if you're in LA, craving them diary fix. Go local and buy Straus!
